BigCommerce helpdesk AI vs Shopify helpdesk AI (chat + phone)

Shopify ships Inbox for storefront chat. BigCommerce does not. Neither cart’s native stack is the same agent on website live chat and the packing-slip number.

BigCommerce helpdesk AI vs Shopify helpdesk AI (chat + phone)

This page compares two stacks, not “Shopify AI vs BigCommerce AI.” Shopify ships a first-party storefront chat app. BigCommerce staff have said there is no native live-chat module. Neither cart documents the same agent on the storefront widget and the number printed on a packing slip.

Guzli sells a chat-plus-inbound front line and wrote this page. Facts below are from public vendor docs and community answers, read 19 September 2026 — not a latency or resolution-rate bake-off. The BigCommerce shortlist lives on best AI customer support agent for BigCommerce. The Shopify inbox roundup lives on best Shopify helpdesk AI.

Keep the native + desk stack if storefront chat (Shopify Inbox) or a third-party helpdesk is the job, and a separate phone product is acceptable.

Add a same-agent front line (Guzli is one published-plan version) if either cart has this gap: the storefront widget and the packing-slip number should share one knowledge base, while Gorgias, Zendesk, Salesforce, or Intercom stays the desk.

What each cart actually ships

Shopify Inbox is first-party storefront chat. Shopify’s help docs describe a messaging app whose customers start from the chat button on the online store. Staff can answer from the Inbox apps, or you can turn on an Inbox agent that reads catalog, store policies, Knowledge Base facts and files, and published storefront content. That is a chat widget on the online store. Shopify does not document Inbox as the agent that answers a DID (the public number printed on a packing slip).

Shopify’s conversation docs add a practical WISMO (“where is my order?”) limit: with new customer accounts, an unsigned Inbox conversation is shown as a Shop visitor and does not include email, phone, cart, or order details until the customer signs in (Managing customer conversations). If staff handoff is off, the Inbox agent cannot email on your behalf; the customer has to start email.

BigCommerce’s official “Communicating with Customers” help article still returns a scripted shell to fetch tools (no usable HTML in this review). What we could read: BigCommerce staff answers that there is no built-in live chat system. A public snippet of the same Communicating article says logged-in shoppers can send order messages from My Account — account messaging about an order, not a storefront widget. For live chat you install a marketplace app or a helpdesk.

Shopify gives you a native chat surface. BigCommerce does not. Neither gives you one agent on the widget and the line.

Shopify stack: Inbox, then a desk, then a phone app

Shopify teams usually buy in this order — and should.

  1. Inbox if the only job is on-site chat against catalog and policies, and you accept the unsigned-visitor limit above.
  2. Gorgias (or Richpanel) when tickets, macros, refunds, social, and TikTok Shop are the inbox. AI Agent is text-first. Gorgias Voice is an add-on so a customer can call to speak with an agent; the interaction is saved as a Voice ticket. Phone AI next to that desk is usually Consio or Ringly. Pattern: Gorgias alternative that answers the phone.
  3. Zendesk when the system of record is already Zendesk. Voice AI sits on Talk — confirm it is on this account. Zendesk alternatives.
  4. Intercom + Fin when the suite is already Intercom. Phone is Fin Voice, documented for select customers partnered with Sales. Does Intercom Fin answer the phone?.
  5. Gladly + Voice AI for larger B2C that wants a Customer timeline. Voice AI is an add-on. Gladly on voice and chat.

Keep the desk. Decide the front line separately. Do not rip Gorgias because a “helpdesk AI vs helpdesk AI” post mentioned the phone.

BigCommerce stack: the helpdesk is the chat decision

BigCommerce operators do not get a free Inbox-shaped default. Unless you add a separate widget, the helpdesk decision is the chat decision.

Marketplace widget first. If you only need on-site chat and you do not yet have a desk, merchants install a live-chat app (LiveChat is one listing on the BigCommerce app directory) or paste a third-party snippet. That is a chat buy, not a phone buy.

Gorgias still shows up because Shopify veterans bring the brand. Gorgias’s compatibility docs say AI Agent is not supported on BigCommerce (or Magento / WooCommerce). Shopify-connected stores get AI Agent and Order Management. On BigCommerce the documented automation is Flows and article recommendations — the desk can still be Gorgias; the AI Agent SKU (that paid AI Agent product) is not. Confirm what your workspace actually has. Phone is still a bolt-on. BigCommerce-specific shortlist: best AI customer support agent for BigCommerce.

Zendesk and Intercom are the other common desks. Same phone caveat as on Shopify: Talk + Voice AI, or Fin Voice, only when that SKU is enabled.

Gladly is a conversation platform, not a BigCommerce theme app. Voice AI is still the add-on.

Stay on email + order messages if volume is low and you will staff the phone yourself. BigCommerce vs Shopify does not change the phone gap. It changes whether you already had a native chat widget before you bought the desk.

Connect BigCommerce from Guzli’s named integration only when the job is the storefront widget and the inbound line — not a desk replacement.

Fin Voice and Gladly Voice AI can be one agent on chat and the call. They are suite or platform buys, often sales-led. Zendesk Voice AI is a Talk packaging question. None of those are “the cart did it.”

Worked path (desk research, not a timed test). A Shopify store already on Gorgias turns on Inbox for catalog questions. A shopper who is not signed in asks “where is order 1042.” Inbox’s own docs say that unsigned new-account chat has no order details — so the useful reply is “sign in or give the order email,” not a made-up ETA. The same store then buys Consio for the packing-slip number. A BigCommerce store never had Inbox, so the first install is Gorgias or a marketplace widget — and the phone is still a second product. In both cases, tickets stay in the desk. The new work, if you want one agent on both surfaces, is publishing a storefront widget and forwarding the existing number, not exporting the helpdesk.

Guzli’s same-agent product is website live chat and inbound phone on one knowledge base. Handoff opens a ticket in the desk you keep or Guzli’s own help desk. Connect Shopify from the Shopify integration page — Guzli is not a Shopify App Store listing (Shopify support chatbot). This page does not claim automated Shopify refund write-back.

Guzli limits. Hobby is chat-only. Voice starts on Standard. No HIPAA, VPC, or self-host. Guzli does not replace Gorgias macros, Fin’s suite, Gladly’s Customer timeline, or Zendesk as the system of record.

Published plan vs the stack you already pay for

Guzli (/pricing/, 19 September 2026): Hobby at $49/mo for chat-only. Standard at $149 + 16¢/min (talk 16¢/min, transfer 5¢/min, 3 concurrent). Pro at $499 + 14¢/min (talk 14¢/min, transfer 4¢/min, 8 concurrent). Inbox, Gorgias, Fin, Gladly, and Zendesk are suite or seat products — they do not publish a screenshotable storefront card that is comparable to those cents-per-minute rates. Stay on them when that layer is the job.
