Vapi AI vs a chat+phone AI agent
Vapi is an assembler for voice (and now chat). Guzli is one published-plan agent for the storefront widget and the inbound line. Stay on Vapi if engineers own the stack. Guzli publishes this comparison.
Vapi AI vs a chat+phone AI agent
Pick Vapi if developers will own speech-to-text (STT), the language model (LLM), text-to-speech (TTS), and telephony — or you are shipping voice (and text) into your own product. See current Vapi plans and pricing.
Pick Guzli if shoppers need the same order-status and return answers on website live chat and the inbound store number, without an assembler project.
Guzli sells the second product and wrote this page. Facts below are from Vapi’s public docs and pricing, read 19 September 2026 — not a latency bake-off. This page answers “Vapi vs a packaged chat + phone support agent.” Meter-level bring-your-own-keys (BYOK) and hosting live on Guzli vs Vapi. Shortlist: Vapi alternatives.
What you are buying
Vapi is infrastructure: you wire speech-to-text, the model, text-to-speech, and the carrier. That is why engineers pick it — BYOK (bring your own API keys so STT, the LLM, and TTS pass through at provider cost), SIP (a Session Initiation Protocol trunk — often your own Twilio account), outbound as well as inbound, tools/webhooks, evals, and a concurrency add-on when four lines are not enough. Chat is a developer surface — POST https://api.vapi.ai/chat or a web widget. On 19 September 2026 the widget mode prop is voice or chat (docs no longer list a hybrid value). Chat mode is text-only; voice mode is voice-only. Session docs cover chat and SMS (previousChatId or sessionId; sessions expire in 24 hours by default). One assistant ID is not proof the inbound public-telephone-network (PSTN) call and the website widget share knowledge.
Guzli is a packaged support agent. Train on help articles, the site, files, and solved tickets from Salesforce, Zendesk, or the desk you keep. Live chat and inbound voice share that knowledge. Handoff opens a ticket in that desk or Guzli’s own help desk. Named tools when connected: Shopify, Stripe, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Calendly, HubSpot, Salesforce, Zendesk, Slack, WhatsApp, Zapier. Shopify integration is not an App Store app.
A contractor demo that attached Shopify as a Vapi tool is still two separate conversations unless you designed them to share context.
| Criterion | Vapi (docs, 19 September 2026) | Guzli |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates it | Engineer: STT / LLM / TTS / telephony | Ops: train and forward a number |
| Widget + inbound public phone as one agent | Confirm in your build | Yes on Standard or Pro |
| Shopify helpdesk | No — Shopify can be a tool you write | Named storefront connect, not App Store |
| Concurrent lines | Usage-only: 4; Core package: 10; extra lines listed at $10/line/month on the comparison table. Pro success package lists 30. | Standard 3; Pro 8 (/pricing/) |
| HIPAA + BAA | Paid org-wide add-on + emailed Business Associate Agreement (HIPAA docs). The pricing page lists the add-on at $2,000/month. HIPAA (US health-data rules) and zero data retention (ZDR) are mutually exclusive. Protected health information (PHI) only through /call. | Guzli does not sell that add-on |
What “same assistant” actually means on Vapi
Attach the same assistant id to the widget and to a Vapi phone number, and you have two entry points into one prompt. That is still work you designed:
- Widget chat uses session management (
sessionId/previousChatId). Docs say the web chat widget and SMS manage sessions for you. An inbound public-telephone-network call is a call, not that chat session. - Tools, Shopify lookups, and knowledge files exist only if you added them to that assistant.
- A second assistant, a stale prompt, or a different tool set is a second brain. The shopper will not see your architecture diagram.
Guzli will not win a BYOK / SIP / “we sell a voice API” request-for-proposal. Vapi will not become a helpdesk because you embedded the widget.
Time-to-first-call and who stays on the hook
On Vapi, first useful call is an engineering loop: keys, assistant, number or SIP trunk, tools, and a test matrix (barge-in, transfer, after hours). Someone has to own prompt drift and the all-in cents-per-minute when Deepgram + the language model + ElevenLabs stack on the $0.05 hosting.
On Guzli, first useful call is ops: train the knowledge base, publish the widget, forward the existing number. You do not pick speech-to-text, the model, or text-to-speech. You also do not get BYOK, a Business Associate Agreement, or more than Pro’s 8 concurrent lines.
If you already run Gorgias or Freshdesk, tickets stay there either way. The new work is the widget and the forward — or the assembler project — not exporting the helpdesk.
Voiceflow, Retell, Gorgias, and Fin
These are the adjacent classes, not a four-way bake-off.
Voiceflow. Conversation design: playbooks, workflows, deploy to web chat or phone. Stay if the job is the graph. Leave if the job is covering a store phone number this week.
Retell. Voice platform. Hybrid widget takes a chat agent ID and a voice agent ID. Shopify on Retell’s site has been a Zapier walkthrough — confirm on retellai.com. Public HIPAA packaging is different from Vapi’s paid add-on (confirm the live Retell card; do not treat a third-party blog as the contract). Retell vs a chat + phone agent.
Gorgias. Shopify helpdesk. Voice lets customers call to speak with an agent; the interaction is saved as a Voice ticket. Phone AI is usually Consio or Ringly. Keep the desk.
Intercom + Fin. Suite chat. Fin Voice when Sales has enabled it — select sales-partnered customers; price on the order form.
Failure cases on both sides
Vapi. All-in cents-per-minute is unknown until you add providers. HIPAA mode limits you to approved speech-to-text, language-model, and text-to-speech vendors and is org-wide — no per-assistant exception. HIPAA and zero data retention cannot both be on. Prompt and tool drift is yours. The widget mode is one modality at a time in current docs. Extra concurrency is an add-on.
Guzli. No BYOK, no public Business Associate Agreement, Standard 3 / Pro 8 concurrent, Hobby is chat-only. Not a helpdesk and not a voice API you embed in a product you sell.
Price (USD, 19 September 2026)
See current Vapi plans and pricing (read 19 September 2026). That URL shows two public presentations. Success packages: usage-only prepaid hosting $0.05/min; speech-to-text, language-model, and text-to-speech pass-through at provider rates; 4 concurrent on usage-only; Core 10 concurrent / 5 numbers; Pro is 10% of hosting with a $999/mo minimum and 30 concurrent; Premier is custom. A comparison table on the same URL lists HIPAA at $2,000/month, zero data retention at $1,000/month, extra concurrency at $10/line/month, and SMS/Chat at $0.005/msg on Build. Confirm which plan your org is actually billed on. All-in voice cents-per-minute stays unknown until you add providers.
Guzli (/pricing/): Hobby at $49/mo for chat-only. Standard at $149 + 16¢/min (talk rate 16¢/min, transfer 5¢/min, 3 concurrent). Pro at $499 + 14¢/min (talk 14¢/min, transfer 4¢/min, 8 concurrent). Chat-credit overage at the listed checkout rate.
Stay on Vapi for BYOK, a SIP trunk, your Twilio account, more concurrent lines than Pro’s 8, or a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement ($2,000/month on the public card, plus the emailed agreement). Guzli will not out-API Vapi.
| You should buy… | If… |
|---|---|
| Vapi | Developers own the voice stack; you ship voice (and chat) into a product |
| Voiceflow | Designing flows / agents, not covering a store phone number this week |
| Retell | Latency-sensitive voice API; Chat Agent is extra on that platform |
| Gorgias or Fin | The desk or suite already runs the brand; phone is a bolt-on or gated Voice |
| Guzli | Same answers on website live chat and inbound phone; keep Salesforce/Zendesk |
Phone-only vs chat-only is a different split: answering service vs website chatbot. How a call runs: Can AI answer phone calls?.
FAQ
Does Vapi include a Shopify helpdesk?
No. Vapi is a voice (and chat) assembler. Shopify can be a tool you write onto an assistant. That is not a packaged helpdesk, and attaching Shopify in a demo is still two separate conversations unless you designed them to share context. Guzli names a storefront connect and is not a Shopify App Store app.
Can the same Vapi assistant cover website chat and inbound phone?
You can attach the same assistant id to the widget and to a Vapi phone number — two entry points into one prompt. Widget chat uses session IDs that expire in 24 hours by default; an inbound public-telephone-network call is a different session. Current widget docs list mode as voice or chat, not both at once. Confirm in your build that tools and knowledge files sit on that assistant.
Why is the all-in voice cost unknown until you add providers?
Vapi’s public hosting rate is $0.05/min on usage-only. Speech-to-text, the language model, and text-to-speech pass through at provider rates (or $0 if you bring your own keys). Deepgram + the model + ElevenLabs stack on top of hosting. HIPAA is a $2,000/month add-on on the public card. Extra concurrent lines appear at $10/line/month on the comparison table. Add those before you treat $0.05 as the bill.
Does Guzli replace Vapi for a voice API you embed in a product?
No. Guzli is a packaged support agent for website live chat and the inbound store number. It does not sell bring-your-own-keys, a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunk to your own carrier, a public Business Associate Agreement, or more than Pro’s 8 concurrent lines. Stay on Vapi when engineers own the stack or you ship voice into a product you sell.
