Retell AI vs a Chat + Phone AI Agent for Shopify (2026)

Retell is voice infrastructure with chat attached. Guzli is one agent on the storefront widget and the phone — not a Zap around a call.

Retell AI vs a chat + phone AI agent for ecommerce

Pick Retell if developers will own prompts, tools, and telephony — SIP trunks, phone menus (IVR), keypad tones (DTMF), live take-over — or you are shipping voice into your own product.

Pick Guzli if Shopify shoppers need the same where-is-my-order (WISMO) and return answers on the storefront widget and the inbound line, without standing up a voice API and a second agent ID for chat.

You can build a great phone agent and still lose the shopper who never dials. These are not the same buy. A Shopify brand can also keep the helpdesk plus a partner dialer, or use Retell only for outbound order-confirmation Zaps. Those are different jobs than one storefront brain. Guzli publishes this comparison and sells the packaged storefront agent.

This post is the support fork: “Retell vs a chat + phone agent” for a store that already has a desk. The API pairwise — latency, SIP, invoice meters, concurrency — lives on Guzli vs Retell. Shortlist: Retell AI alternatives. Do not read this as a Retell replacement guide.

What you are actually buying

Retell is a voice-agent platform: APIs, SDKs, SIP trunks (the phone-system connection), inbound and outbound. Dashboard and docs cover phone menus (IVR), keypad tones (DTMF), simulation, and live take-over. That is what builders ship. Chat arrived later as a standalone Chat Agent plus an embeddable website widget (public key + script tag). You create a chat agent from scratch or convert from a voice agent. Retell’s create-chat-agent guide notes conversion drops voice-only nodes such as transfers and DTMF.

Guzli is a packaged support agent. Website live chat is the core surface. Inbound voice and SMS share that brain. Train on help articles and solved tickets from Salesforce, Zendesk, or whichever desk you keep. Shopify integration for storefront context — not an App Store app, and not a Zap around a call.

Verdict: Retell is infrastructure you operate. Guzli is a front line you publish. If an engineer will own the conversation graph, keep Retell. If ops needs the widget and the store number to agree by Friday, you are not shopping a voice API.

The hybrid widget’s two IDs

Retell’s website widget docs (read 19 September 2026) are explicit. Hybrid mode takes a chat agent ID and a voice agent ID, then shows a chooser between “Voice Assistant” and “Chat Assistant.” Chat-only uses the chat ID. Voice-only uses the voice ID. A third callback mode collects a number and has a voice agent dial out.

Two IDs inside one shell is not one helpdesk-trained brain answering typed and spoken questions by default. You can attach a knowledge base to more than one agent — that is a builder step, not the default of pasting two IDs.

Confirm on docs.retellai.com whether your agents share knowledge the way a storefront agent does. Guzli trains once. Typed and spoken questions hit the same brain.

If the chat agent and the voice agent drifted last sprint, the shopper who types and the shopper who dials will not notice your architecture. They will notice two answers.

Shopify as a Zap, not a storefront brain

Retell’s Shopify integration page (read 19 September 2026) is a Zapier walkthrough: log into Zapier, pick a Shopify event or a completed Retell call as trigger, map phone/agent/transcript, flip the Zap. Published example: high-value order → confirmation call. Useful automation. Order context reaches the line because you wired a Zap — not because storefront and phone share one training set out of the box.

On Retell’s integrations index (read 19 September 2026), Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, and Calendly show up as native-style connectors. Stripe on that index is an automation-platform connector. Shopify is listed there as an unofficial / automation-platform connector. Watch retellai.com if a native Shopify connector ships later.

Guzli’s Shopify path is the widget plus the inbound line. Still not App Store.

Verdict: Retell Shopify is “trigger a call from an order event.” Guzli Shopify is “the agent already knows the store.”

Keep Retell when you are shipping voice

Stay on Retell when:

  • SIP trunks, your own carrier (BYO), phone menus (IVR), keypad tones (DTMF), and live take-over are the product.
  • You are embedding voice in your app, not covering a Shopify support line.
  • Concurrency and telephony ownership matter more than a no-code widget.

Guzli will not out-API Retell. That sentence is why Guzli vs Retell exists. Phone-only receptionist vs chat-only widget is a third fork: AI answering service vs website chatbot.

Retell is pay-as-you-go voice meters. The dashboard cents-per-minute is not always what lands on the bill. Retell’s billing exceptions (read 19 September 2026) scale billed duration when prompt tokens exceed 4,000 (global prompt, tools, transcript, retrieved knowledge-base chunks). Ask Retell. Guzli publishes Hobby at $49/mo chat-only; voice starts Standard at $149 + 16¢/min talk (5¢/min transfer, 3 concurrent); Pro is $499 + 14¢/min (4¢/min transfer, 8 concurrent). RetellDevelopers own voice APIs, SIP trunks, phone menus (IVR), keypad tones (DTMF), live take-over; you are shipping voice into your own product; Chat Agent is an add-on on that platform
GuzliSame answers on widget and store number; refuse two agent IDs or a Zap to keep answers aligned; keep Salesforce/Zendesk for the inbox

FAQ

Does Retell do website live chat and inbound phone?+

Voice is the core product. Chat is a Chat Agent plus an embeddable widget — chat-only, hybrid, or callback. Hybrid mode takes a chat agent ID and a voice agent ID, then shows a chooser. Two IDs inside one shell is not one helpdesk-trained brain by default. You can attach a knowledge base to more than one agent — that is a builder step.

Is Shopify native on Retell?+

Retell’s Shopify integration page (read 19 September 2026) is a Zapier walkthrough: an order event or a completed call as trigger, then map fields and flip the Zap. Useful automation. Order context reaches the line because you wired a Zap — not because storefront and phone share one training set out of the box. Watch retellai.com if a native connector ships later.

When should a Shopify team keep Retell?+

Keep it when developers will own prompts, tools, and telephony — SIP trunks, phone menus, keypad tones, live take-over — or you are shipping voice into your own product. If ops needs the widget and the store number to agree on where-is-my-order answers by Friday, you are not shopping a voice API. The API pairwise lives on Guzli vs Retell.
