Best AI Answering Service (2026): Phone-Only Shortlist
If you only need the line picked up, start with Upfirst, Rosie, or Smith.ai. If shoppers also use the website widget, phone-only leaves a hole — unless that vendor’s widget is the same brain.
Which AI answering service is the best?
Depends whether the website also takes support questions.
Phone only — missed calls, after-hours intake, a trade that lives on the line — Upfirst, Rosie, or Smith.ai can be enough. Confirm their live prices with them; the figures below are from public pages read 19 September 2026.
Same people on the widget and the phone, asking help-center questions — a phone-only answering service is the wrong category. You will maintain two scripts. Category split: AI answering service vs website chatbot. Product test for widgets that also pick up: best AI chatbot that also answers the phone.
Guzli sells the chat-plus-phone agent and wrote this page. It sits next to this list, not on it, if your search was strictly “answer the phone.” Fin Voice and Zendesk Talk are suite add-ons, not a $25 receptionist.
What you are actually shopping
An answering service picks up, takes a message or lead, sometimes books, texts you. The product is the number. Website chat is not in the box — except Rosie, which now includes a widget on the same receptionist knowledge.
An AI receptionist is the front desk on that number: greet, answer, book, transfer. Guzli’s AI receptionist also runs website chat from help articles and solved tickets. Phone-only receptionists do not.
A voice API (Vapi, Bland, Retell) is a building block. You assemble the agent. vs Vapi, vs Bland, vs Retell.
Chatbot + phone is one agent on help articles and solved tickets for the widget and the inbound call. That is Guzli. It is not a phone-only answering service. Hobby is $49/mo chat-only. Voice starts on Standard at $149 + 16¢/min talk (5¢/min transfer, 3 concurrent). Pro is $499 + 14¢/min (4¢ transfer, 8 concurrent). See current plans and pricing.
The phone-first shortlist
Upfirst — greet, business FAQs, booking, text summary. Pricing: Starter $24.95/mo for 30 calls, $1.50 overage; Premium $59.95/90; Pro $159.95/300. Upfirst’s own 2026 comparison says inbound calls only — no website chat. Receptionist replacement, not a storefront bot.
Rosie — trades and field service: intake, scheduling, English/Spanish on every plan, mobile-first. Pricing: Professional $49/mo for 250 minutes; Scale $149/1,000; Growth $299/2,000. Website chat is now free with all plans, using the same knowledge Rosie already has from the phone setup. That is still not a help-center-trained Salesforce/Zendesk agent. If shoppers ask “where is my order?” in website chat (support teams often call those WISMO tickets), you still have a gap.
Smith.ai — AI plus optional live North America receptionists. AI Receptionist: Free 25 calls, then $3 overage; Pro $150/mo for 75 calls at $2/call. Live-agent add-on is +$3 per call when used. Human-first receptionists start at $300/mo for 30 calls. Web chat is a separate live-staffed product. Smith.ai wins when a person on the call is the product.
Guzli belongs when you also want the widget from the same help-article / solved-ticket brain: train once, forward the number (always, or only after hours / no-answer / busy), look up a Shopify order or book Calendly on both surfaces when you connect them, hand off into Salesforce, Zendesk, or Guzli’s help desk. Not a live human bench. Not a 500-agent floor. Not a Shopify App Store app.
What is not an answering service
Fin Voice — sales-gated voice agent inside Fin. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin (formerly Intercom) on 10 September 2026 (Salesforce press release). That changes who owns the vendor. Deploy Fin Voice still says Voice is limited to select customers partnered with Sales. Does Fin answer the phone?
Gorgias Voice / Consio / Ringly — phone next to a Shopify helpdesk. Gorgias Voice docs describe a human taking the call as a Voice ticket. Two products. Gorgias alternative that answers the phone.
Zendesk Talk + Voice AI — telephony inside Suite. Voice AI agents became generally available 1 September 2026 for eligible Talk customers (not Talk Partner Edition). Confirm packaging on your account.
Use those when the desk is already the system of record. Do not price them like Upfirst.
| Option | Chat | Phone | Human on the line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfirst | No (vendor says inbound only) | Inbound | No |
| Rosie | Included widget; receptionist knowledge | Inbound | No |
| Smith.ai | Separate chat product | Inbound | Yes, if you pay for it |
| Guzli | Widget, same agent | Inbound on Standard+ | Ticket, not a receptionist bench |
| Fin Voice | Suite chat | Order form | Suite inbox |
| Vapi / Bland / Retell | You build it | You build it | You build it |
Phone-only is the wrong buy when
Shoppers ask order status in chat at 2pm and call at 7pm. Help articles and solved Salesforce or Zendesk tickets already have the answers. You need the same Shopify or Stripe action on both channels. You want one inbox, not a text from the answering service plus a separate chat log.
Then you are shopping a chat-plus-phone agent, not this list.
One week, five calls
Forward after hours only. Call hours, pricing, booking, order status, “talk to a person.” Send the same five through the widget if you have one. If the answers diverge, you have two brains. A transfer should arrive with a summary.
Math without invented ROI: how much an AI call answering service costs. Fully free production phone AI is rare: free AI phone answering.
Keep your existing number? With Guzli, forward it. Other vendors: ask forwarding vs porting.
If the site never takes support questions, pick Upfirst or Rosie (or Smith.ai for the human net) and stop. If it does, book a demo on one agent instead of stacking a receptionist on a widget.
FAQ
Is a phone-only answering service enough if customers also use the website widget?
Only if the widget never takes help-center questions. If the same people ask policy or order questions in chat at 2pm and call at 7pm, a phone-only service leaves you maintaining two scripts. Then you are shopping a chat-plus-phone agent, not this list.
Does Rosie’s included website chat replace a support helpdesk agent?
No. Rosie now includes a widget on every plan, using the same receptionist knowledge it already has from the phone setup. That is not a help-center-trained Salesforce or Zendesk agent. If shoppers ask “where is my order?” in chat, you still have a gap.
Can I keep my existing business number?
With Guzli, forward it (always, or only after hours / no-answer / busy). Other vendors: ask forwarding versus porting. Upfirst’s public pricing FAQ also says you can forward a cellphone, landline, or VoIP number without porting.
