Is There a Free AI Phone Answering Service Available? (2026)
Fully free inbound phone AI almost never exists. Trials and chat-only tiers do. A $0 widget is not a $0 store number.
Is there a free AI phone answering service available?
No — not as a production replacement for a staffed line. Carriers bill minutes. Numbers cost money. Transfers cost money. Anyone promising unlimited free live phone AI is running a short trial, capping minutes, or making you the product.
You can still try chat without a large contract. That is not a free phone line. Guzli sells a published-plan chat-and-phone agent and wrote this page. Desk research of public vendor cards, read 19 September 2026. Guzli Hobby is $49/mo chat-only. Current plans and pricing also shows a $0 Free chat row (100 message credits) — still no inbound number. Voice starts on Standard at $149 + 16¢/min (5¢/min transfer, 3 concurrent calls). Pro is $499 + 14¢/min (4¢/min transfer, 8 concurrent). The math page: how much an AI call answering service costs.
Why the carrier does not go to zero
Three costs stay:
- Phone-network minutes — inbound and outbound time purchased from carriers on the public switched telephone network (the ordinary phone network).
- Speech — recognition and voice generation have a unit cost.
- Concurrency — two callers at once means two streams.
A website chatbot can hide some of that in a credit bundle. A phone agent cannot hide the carrier. That is why Guzli publishes ¢/min on Standard and Pro instead of a “free voice” product.
Human answering services have the same problem at a higher labor rate. AI lowers the labor line. It does not delete the phone network. US health-privacy rules (HIPAA) or self-hosted voice are not Guzli claims, and they are not free-tier claims either.
What “free” on a vendor page usually is
| Offer | What you get | Fine print (checked 19 September 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Free chat plan | Widget + a small credit cap | No inbound number. Guzli Free is 100 chat credits. |
| Time-boxed phone trial | Days or a call allotment | Upfirst documents a 14-day full-feature trial, then Starter at $24.95/mo for 30 calls. Rosie advertises a 7-day trial, then paid minute pools. |
| “Free forever” phone marketing | A small included pool, then overage or a stop | Sloane documents Starter at $0 with 25 minutes, then $0.20/min. That is a cap, not unlimited live phone AI. |
| Missed-call / voicemail AI | Answers only when you do not | Lizy says it is 100% free and only answers when you are unavailable — a voicemail replacement, not a staffed-line substitute. |
| Money-back, not free | You pay, then can cancel | Smith.ai receptionist plans start at $300/mo for 30 live-staffed calls with a 30-day money-back cap — not a standing $0 AI line. |
| Free API credits | Minutes for developers | You write the agent; carrier fees remain. |
| Demo line | You call them | Your customers are not calling you. |
If the page does not show a minute cap, a concurrency cap, and an overage rule, it is not a production offer. Do not treat “100 free credits” as phone-network minutes.
Guzli: chat you can start, voice you pay for
Hobby is chat-only. Free is widget practice. Voice is not on Free or Hobby. A trial exists only if checkout shows one — there is no standing “free voice” promise.
Need the AI receptionist or AI voice agent? Plan for Standard.
Phone-only tools (Upfirst, Rosie, Smith.ai) are answering services, not website chatbots. After the trial or guarantee, you pay per call or per minute. None of them make the carrier disappear.
Suite voice (Fin Voice, Zendesk Voice AI, Gorgias Voice) is not free. Deploy Fin Voice is still sales-partnered. fin.ai/pricing puts Voice on a custom plan. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin on 10 September 2026; that does not create a free phone product.
Developer platforms (Vapi, Bland, Retell) may give starter credits. You still engineer the agent. vs Vapi, vs Bland, vs Retell.
A marketing line that a free widget “supports voice and text” usually means text now, voice later. The chat-plus-phone buy: best AI chatbot that also answers the phone.
Google Voice + ChatGPT is a hobby stack. Two systems, no named Shopify or Stripe actions, no ticket ingest from Salesforce or Zendesk, no one inbox. Not a support front line.
Try the brain before you spend on minutes
Train on help articles and solved tickets. Put the website chatbot on one page. Call a staging or demo number. Only forward the production line when the same questions match in chat and voice. A stuck turn should create a ticket in Salesforce, Zendesk, or Guzli’s help desk. Start after hours so a bad answer does not hit peak traffic.
Do not forward the main revenue line to an untested free API. Do not pick a vendor from a fake deflection percentage. Do not run two free tools (one chat, one phone) and expect one policy.
Cheapest honest path: train chat on Free or Hobby, then add Standard when you are ready to publish the number. Two vendors cost more. A night-shift receptionist costs more for routine intents. How a paid call works: Can AI answer phone calls?.
FAQ
Is there a free production AI phone answering service?
No as a staffed-line replacement. “Free forever” phone pages still show a minute cap, missed-call-only scope, a short trial, or they make you the product. Inspect the cap and overage before you forward the store number.
Is a free chatbot the same as a free phone line?
No. Chat can hide cost in a credit bundle. The carrier does not disappear on a call. Guzli Hobby is $49/mo chat-only; the $0 Free chat row (100 message credits) still has no inbound number.
What do vendor “free” pages usually mean?
A time-boxed trial (Upfirst 14 days, then $24.95/mo for 30 calls; Rosie 7 days), a capped free-forever pool (Sloane 25 minutes then $0.20/min), missed-call-only AI (Lizy), money-back after you pay (Smith.ai from $300/mo for 30 live-staffed calls), developer API credits, or a demo line you call. If the page does not show a minute cap, a concurrency cap, and an overage rule, it is not a production offer.
What is the cheapest honest path on Guzli?
Train chat on Free or Hobby, then add Standard when you are ready to publish the number. Voice is $149 + 16¢/min on Standard (5¢/min transfer, 3 concurrent calls). Do not forward the main revenue line to an untested free API, and do not run two free tools (one chat, one phone) and expect one policy.
